Sunnyside teen killed in ATV collision
SUNNYSIDE, Wash.-- The Yakima County Sheriff's Office is investigating a two vehicle collision that claimed the life of Sunnyside boy Tuesday afternoon.
Deputies responded to the 450 block of Wendell Phillips Rd. at about 4:40 p.m., where they found a 1994 Ford pick-up that had collided with a Polaris ATV.
Investigators say the ATV had been driving along an orchard road, when it went onto Wendell Phillips Rd. without stopping or checking for oncoming traffic.
The pick-up truck struck the utility vehicle, and the 14-year old driver was ejected from the ATV, hitting the pick-up's windshield.
The boy died at the scene.
The victim's 12-year old brother was on the back of the ATV, and received what deputies describe as life-threatening injuries.
He was ultimately airlifted to Kadlec Medical Center in Richland by Life Flight.
The 18-year old driver of the pick-up was not hurt.
Investigators do not suspect that any intoxicants played a role in the crash.
The incident is being investigated by the Yakima County Sheriff's Office Traffic Unit.
