Fire breaks out in Union Gap restaurant kitchen

A restaurant in Union Gap is expected to be closed for a short period of time after a fire broke out in the kitchen early Thursday morning.

Yakima Firefighters say they arrived at the El Porton Restaurant around 4:46 a.m. on 2500 Main Street and found a small fire in the kitchen area. Firefighters were able to quickly put it out but had to check and make sure it didn't spread to the attic. Firefighters say it extended into the ventilation shaft but did not go any further.

Crews say a portion of the road was closed for a time so crews do mop up the area. Fire caused about $50,000 damage to the kitchen area and smoke and water damage throughout.

Firefighters say the cause is ruled accidental.
