Washington OIC Fines Aetna

Washington State Insurance Commissioner has fined Aetna Life Insurance Co. $25,000 for discriminating against policyholders who sought gender-affirming medical treatment. It goes back to a 2019 complaint in which the insurer denied coverage for a breast augmentation.

During the investigation, Aetna reversed its decision for the consumer who submitted the complaint, but failed to do so for three other policyholders who sought similar treatment.
