A K-9 handler will have a new tool to keep his four-legged partner safe.

K-9 "Garrett's" handler Joseph Phillips with Adams County Sheriff Department says they were selected to receive a vest from "Keeping K-9s in Kevlar," a non-profit which will pay for the vest which costs nearly $2,000.

"That is what Garrett is for, is to save our lives as law enforcement officers and it is awesome is that we are able to give it back to him a little bit and keep him stay safe as well," says Phillips.

Phillips says it will not be used every day, but only in dangerous situations where the suspect is believed to be armed. Currently they are working to fit the vest properly to "Garrett" and once that is complete, a customized vest will be shipped to the department.

"Garrett" is the only K-9 with the Adam County Sheriff's office.
