(Richland, WA) -- Tri-Cities area youth will soon have a much easier time getting around town. Ben Franklin Transit is launching a new "Youth Ride Free" pilot program. Starting June 1st, anyone under the age of 18 will be able to use BFT services completely free of charge--provided they pick up a youth pass either online or from a BFT Ticketing outlet. Agency staff attempted to streamline the process a little by dropping passes off at area schools.

"Our whole idea to delivering them to the schools right away was to make sure that they got into the hands of the kids who need them most. We work with the districts and community partners like Communities In Schools" said Outreach Coordinator Mindy Miley.

Many students in the area are already using Ben Franklin Transit to get to school and back. Sandra Ramirez is one such student currently attending New Horizons High School in Pasco.

"I use the bus pass since my family is big and since my mom has two small twins, she doesn't really have the time to drive me over here and then just take me back. She said upon receiving her new pass. The youth passes are valid for the buses, dial-a-ride, and BFT Connect services. "Pretty shocking but it's also really beneficial because I do like like a mile from a bus stop. Knowing this information will make it much easier."

The six-month trial will run through November 30th. More information is available online at bft.org.
