When the Grant County Jail was built in 1986, the capacity was 85.

"In 1997, it was refurbished to accommodate 198 beds", Grant County Sheriff Tom Jones says. "Since that time, we've been running at 200% capacity at the jail, day in and day out."

And the criminals know that too.

That's why the Sheriffs Department has put a Criminal Justice Tax Proposal on the November ballot that would increase the county's sales tax by .30%, with the funds going to a new jail and the hiring of more personnel.

There will be a community meeting to talk about the plan Thursday evening at the District 7 Fire Station in Lakeview.
