(Kennewick, WA) -- Kennewick Fire Department crews fought both a fire and the bitter cold New Year's Day, after a blaze begins inside a gazebo, and reaches a home's first floor. This happened around 3:15pm off 4605 South Ledbetter Street. According to a statement from Kennewick Fire, dispatch reported a small shed or gazebo on fire in the backyard at this address. The The first KFD crew found visible flames coming from the back of the home and heavy fire on the first floor of the home. The fire was brought under control within 15 minutes of fire crews arriving on scene. Two dogs were found dead. According to Kennewick Fire Chief Chad Michael, weather conditions made this a particularly challenging fire. The temperature at the time was 17 degrees. Michael says cold weather conditions present a wide range of challenges for fighters including staying warm and increased slip hazards when deploying equipment.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
