After a district-record four day strike, teachers have overwhelmingly approved a new two-year contract.

Although few details about the agreement have been released, both sides say they are pleased the matter has been resolved. The deal includes a salary increase for all teachers in the district, as well as addressing safety concerns. Specifically, administration will inform teachers when students enroll in their class who have records of weapons, assaults, threats, bullying or violence. The District has also agreed to provide walkie-talkies or other devices for staff who need to contact administration in the event of an emergency.

Another facet of the contract is in regards to class size. If an elementary school classroom exceeds a certain number of students, extra pay will be given. Members of the KSD and KEA will also create a Special Education Task Force.

"We are so proud of our tireless KEA Bargaining Team members for their efforts and of our members for their courage to do what was right to ensure high quality teachers for the students in our community", KEA president Rob Woodford said. "We have been continuously touched and bolstered by the unwavering support of our community. This has been a long and difficult road, and we are excited we have an agreement so we can get back to school."

The school district also released a statement, saying in part: "These past few days have been very challenging for our Kennewick staff and community. We recognize that this has been a time of uncertainty and stress, and we know emotions ran high. Now that an agreement has been reached, KSD and KEA are committed to rebuilding relationships and trust with one another and our community. Together we now turn our collective focus and energy to ensuring a great start to the 2019–20 school year for our students and families."

The first day of school will be next Tuesday, September 3rd.
