Department of Ecology contractors found no impact to the Columbia River after an estimated 9 gallons of diesel fuel spilled into the river Sunday night.

According to the agency, as the Burlington Northern Santa Fe train traveled from the rail yard in Pasco to the Finley area, 11.1 miles away.

"It looks like they lost about 500 gallons along the way," said Ty Keltner. "

Officials with BNSF confirmed that a mechanical issue caused the fuel spill.

Ecology says BNSF contracts with Clean Harbors to do clean-up.

"They have been working to do some different clean up, they also sent a boat out on the river to assess the impact and they did not find any sheens on the river at all," Keltner confirmed.

He said they did find diesel fuel along the banks of the river on either side of the bridge.

There's no estimated time for how long it might take to clean up the fuel.
