RICHLAND, Wash.-- For restaurant owners who are looking to create outdoor dining space after Gov. Jay Inslee banned indoor dining due to efforts to slow the spread of COVID-19, city leaders encourage you to contact the city to make sure you don't need a permit or fire inspection.

The City of Richland is providing outdoor use waivers to help restaurants and retail businesses expand outdoor spaces.

"The benefit of applying for a waiver is that we can help you navigate the things that can and can't be done under that so we can get you open faster," said Mandy Wallner, Marketing Specialist with the City of Richland.

Wallner says depending on what type of space you're trying to create, you need to make sure your covered outdoor space has good air circulation and isn't fully enclosed.

"Otherwise you're working with an enclosed structure which falls into permitting, and fire safety, and inspections," Wallner said.
