Firefighters put out fire at Hermiston industrial onion storage building

One person was seriously hurt in a fire at an onion storage building Wednesday afternoon.

Hermiston Fire Department says the victim was flown to the burn center in Portland. Everyone else was accounted for and no firefighters were injured.

Officials say the building at Cleaver Farms, Columbia Basin Spreaders location, was fully engulfed when crews were called out.

Firefighters warned the community to avoid Westland Road for a short time because of smoke from the fire.

Firefighters say several departments are helping fight the flames including Umatilla, Irrigon, Stanfield, Pilot Rock and Pendleton.
