The Pasco School District will hold library hours and most of its elementary schools over the summer, beginning July 10th.

"Studies have shown that children tend to drop in their reading abilities from June through August, and their reading levels tend to go down," says Emmerson Elementary librarian Shawn Murphy. "That's especially true for children in low income families."

To help combat the loss, the school district will open up its libraries between July 10th and August 10th, at least two days a week.

"The majority of the kids will come to the library of the school they attend, but they can check out books at any library, as long as they're registered with the school district," Murphy said.

There will also be some story times, where children can be read to. Murphy says they'll host the Boys and Girls Club for story times and other children can join. Those will be held at Emmerson and Maya Angelou Monday and Wednesday for Kindergarten through 3rd Grade, and Tuesday and Thursday for 4th through 6th grade.

"It's really important for kids to read at least 20 minutes a day during the summer, and it's also a good idea for parents to read as an example to their children."

Murphy says there students who check out books will receive an entry into a drawing to receive a family pass to Splashdown Cove at the Tri-City Court Club.
