The Washington Supreme Court has upheld the state's "three strikes and your out" law...sentencing adults to life in prison without the possibility of parole on a third major conviction.

Three cases were combined before the court that unsuccessfully argued that the Persistent Offender Accountability Act was cruel and unusual when offenders get their first "strike" as a young adult, even if they are 18-years or older.

Washington's protection against cruel and unusual punishment is considered much more broad than the federal protection.

The ruling was unanimous.
