(Portland, OR) -- Police are releasing the identity of the officer who shot and killed a suspected carjacker Monday on I-5 in North Portland. Officer John Hughes is a 17-year veteran of the police bureau. According to the Police Association's contract, he'll be interviewed within 48 hours of the shooting. Authorities have not released the name of the man who was killed.

The incident occurred when, according to a police report, the suspect broke into a home around 9:30 a.m. and stole a car there. They believe the person may have then committed a series of armed carjackings before officers caught up to him driving the wrong direction on northbound I-5. At one point, he tried to carjack another driver while police were tailing him, shooting and wounding someone in the process. Police eventually shot and killed the man near Rosa Parks Way.

The victim that was wounded is expected to recover.
