Students in the Tri-Cities get two weeks of vacation from school, which sounds like a great idea. Until they get bored.

"Sometimes those days after Christmas before break is over, sometimes families are looking for something to do and get out of the house." Pauline Schafer with The Reach Museum is a mom, so she understands. She's also an educator at the museum.

Schafer says they have the solution for break-time boredom. They're offering three days of activities for families next Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. The STEAM-based activities about the Ice Age are even educational, but don't tell the kids.

  • Tuesday: Ice Age Floods, science and art activities highlighting how ice age floods shaped the Basin.
  • Wednesday: Ice Age Skills, try your hand at fire-building, making stone tools, rope making, and cave painting.
  • Thursday: Ice Age Beasts, learn about mammoths, including the Columbian Mammoth at Coyote Canyon south of Kennewick, and other animals that lived during the ice age.

They run from 10am to noon each day, on a drop-in basis. Some of the events will be held outdoors, so dress appropriately.

The activities are free with paid admission or a membership. For more information, visit The Reach Museum website.
