Fire broke out in a lower level apartment unit at the Brentwood Apartments in Kennewick just before 7:00 AM Saturday.

According to Battalion Chief Mike Barnett, one person was in that unit in the F building, and was able to evacuate, but suffered some non-life-threatening injuries.

Kennewick Police also responded, and helped to evacuate other nearby units, breaking in doors in some cases to ensure that no one was inside.

The apartment where the fire started suffered extensive smoke and fire damage, while the unit directly above has significant smoke and water damage. At least two other units are uninhabitable for now because of smoke and water damage.

Barnett said the cause and origin of the fire are under investigation.

The Red Cross is responding to help the occupants of the damaged apartment units.
