This month marks 20 years of the Environmental Restoration Disposal Facility, which is essentially Hanford's landfill, where 18 million tons of waste has been deposed of.

Several managers presented and remarked on the operation of ERDF and its role in Hanford cleanup Wednesday in honor of the 20th anniversary.

Federal Project Director Mark French says most the clean up at the river corridor is complete and the focus will turn to the central plateau.

"When we demolish the Plutonium Finishing Plant, we will have a lot of waste generated during that activity and we will also be finishing up some of the work in the River Corridor, such as the 61810 burial ground closer to the 300 area," says French.

A permanent cap will eventually be placed over the facility when the Hanford cleanup is completed.
