Many of us can go a lifetime without ever having to pull the pin on a fire extinguisher.

Did you know that you have to pull a pin on a fire extinguisher?

The Washington State Fire Marshal's Office is reaching out to communities in the state to remind residents about the importance of having working  fire extinguishers in our homes and offices, and knowing how to use one.

"I think often times we're familiar with what fire extinguishers look like, but maybe aren't aware of how to use them, which is why we want to get that message out," says Alyson Van Cleave, Deputy State Fire Marshal.

To help remember the steps to use a fire extinguisher, fire officials use the acronym P.A.S.S. to teach the steps:

  • P is for Pull: Pull the pin on the handle to remove it.
  • A is for Aim: Aim the nozzle of the extinguisher at the base of the flames.
  • S is for Squeeze: Squeeze the top handle downward toward the bottom handle.
  • S is for Sweep: Sweep the nozzle of the fire extinguisher from side to side, aiming at the base of the flames.

VanCleave says it's important to make sure that the fire is not spreading before you attempt to put it out, that someone is calling 911, and that you have a clear escape route before you try putting out the fire.

Fire officials say even with a fire extinguisher, you may be safest to evacuate and call 911.

If you have a fire extinguisher, it's important to make sure that it's checked regularly to ensure that it has pressure and is clean and undamaged.
