A 35-year-old woman is still in critical condition at the hospital following a crash caused by two drivers racing in Walla Walla.

Officers say a 26-year-old driver is believed to have been racing another car on Cascade Drive, going 60 miles per hour on a 30 mph road. Andrea Lowe was pulling out of a gas station when the car hit the side of her car around 11:40 a.m. Wednesday morning.

Lowe suffered from severe internal injuries and a broken pelvis as a result of the wreck. Her 10-year-old son was in the front seat on the passenger side of the vehicle. He suffered a possible broken jaw and was treated and released at a local hospital.

The driver Kamden Knaus, believed to be racing, was taken into custody and is being held on two counts of Vehicular Assault. There were two passengers in the car at the time of the crash and one was also taken to the hospital.

The other driver believed to be involved in the race, was able to stop before hitting anyone. Rick Placencia-Torres had been stopped by a Walla Walla police officer about an hour prior to the collision and cited for an equipment violation.

The Washington State Patrol and Walla Walla County Sheriff’s Office assisted at the scene. A street crew blocked off Isaacs Ave. for about 4 hours while the scene was processed.
