(Yakima County, WA) -- The state of Washington is being added as a defendant in a lawsuit over new political boundaries in Yakima Valley. The lawsuit filed in January by a contingent of Latinx voters and civil rights groups argues the state's new redistricting map violates the Voting Rights Act and intentionally dilutes Latinx voter influence in the Yakima Valley.

The lawsuit is one of two moving forward over redistricting in the state's 15th Legislative District. It names Democratic Secretary of State Steve Hobbs, Democratic state House Speaker Laurie Jinkins and Democratic state Senate Majority Leader Andy Billig as defendants. However, Jinkins and Billig were dismissed from the lawsuit last month.
