Between 1900 and 1950, a pesticide called lead arsenate was extensively used to control codling moth infestations on fruit trees throughout Central Washington, resulting in lead and arsenic contamination in the soils of historic orchard lands in Yakima, Chelan, Douglas and Benton counties.

Because of this, experts have examined aerial photos to closely identify lands used as orchards and created maps for public use to identify potential areas of contamination.
