(Spokane, WA) -- There are calls to remove a statue in downtown Spokane. John R. Monaghan was a sailor from Spokane in 1899 who was among other sailors commanded to destroy Samoan villages. A Citizens Advisory Council has recommended removing the statue, because it contains racial slurs toward the Samoan people. However, it's not clear who actually owns the statue. If it's privately owned the city can't remove it, but protestors are planning a demonstration Saturday at the Clock Tower in Riverfront Park.
