(Portland, OR) -- Portland is now the first city in the United States to offer bereavement leave for employees who undergo an abortion, miscarriage or stillbirth. The policy now offers three days of leave to employees who experience any type of pregnancy loss.

The council also changed its policy to allow employees to take bereavement leave following the death of "any individual related by close affinity" including unmarried partners or any person with whom the employee has a significant personal bond resembling a familial relationship. The policy previously specified the employee must be related to the deceased person by blood or through marriage.
