KENNEWICK, Wash. - A man was arrested by Kennewick Police Monday afternoon after allegedly trying to break into a home and then running from police.

Kennewick Police say they were first called at about 3:30 p.m. about a white, bald man trying to enter a citizen's home in the 400 block of S Rainier Street. The man was unable to get in, so he took off on foot to the area of S Olympia St and W 5th Ave. Officers searched the area and tried to stop the suspect who continued to run through the apartment complexes. Officers lost sight of the man and couldn't find him. A resident in the area saw the man enter an apartment and flagged down an officer to report it. Officers contacted the residents of the apartment, who weren't home, and said they did not know the man that broke in. They gave officers permission to clear the apartment and get the suspect out.

Because officers were dealing with an occupied residential burglary, K-9 Ivan was called in to help. For about 10 minutes, officers gave multiple clear announcements by PA and at the door of the apartments, for the suspect to comply and leave on their own before they used a Police K-9 to search. When there was no response, they sent in K-9 Ivan who found a 22-year-old man hiding under a pile of clothing inside a closet. He was booked in the Benton County Jail on a 72 hour hold for one count of Attempted Residential Burglary and one count of Residential Burglary.
