(Tri-Cities, WA) -- Ten-digit dialing is now in effect for local calls here in Eastern Washington. Anyone making a local call will have to include the 509 area code. Local calls dialed with only 7 digits may not be completed, and a recording will inform you that your call cannot be completed as dialed. Consumers must hang up and dial again using the area code and the 7-digit number.

The change is due to the coming implementation of a National Suicide Prevention Lifeline shortcut that will allow people to access help nationwide by dialing "988". The redirect is scheduled to go live in July of 2022. Until then, those seeking the Lifeline should call 1-800-273-TALK.
