Firefighters believe a 5 acre brush fire which started Monday morning along the Yakima River Greenway path is human-caused and under investigation.

East Valley fire crews say they were called out around 4:40 a.m. to the area near the river at Hartford Road but determined the fire was on the Yakima side of the river. Yakima Fire Department found the flames along the Yakima River Greenway path. Due to the high winds and thick overgrown fuels, crews say they had a hard time getting access to the field.

The fire was contained after it spread five acres, but it did not damage any structures. No one was hurt in the fire. Crews did go around to evacuate any homeless encampments they could find.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation but is being called "suspicious" and likely human-caused.
