One man died after being shot by a Kennewick Police Officer during a confrontation near Columbia Park late Sunday night.

According to a press release, officers patrolling Columbia Park contacted two men near the entrance of the park at Fruitland Drive shortly before midnight.

The park closes at sunset.

Investigators say one of the men started to run away as he and the other subject were being detained, then pulled out what appeared to be a gun.

At least one officer fired their duty weapon striking the suspect.

Officers provided medical aid as paramedics responded, but the man died at the scene.

The other man was taken into custody.

No other subjects and no officers were injured in the incident.

The regional Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has been requested and will be conducting the investigation of the incident.  SIU will be comprised of investigators from regional law enforcement agencies other than the Kennewick Police Department.

The involved officer will be placed on administrative leave during the investigation.
