Man shoots self following home invasion

A man broke into a Benton City residence Saturday night, where he shot and killed himself.

According to a press release from the Benton County Sheriff's Office, Steven Stewart Eggars, 47, broke through a living room window at an apartment on 14th St. and went into the apartment. He went into a bedroom where a man and woman were sleeping, and threatened them with a revolver.

Deputies say Eggars had been involved in a domestic relationship with the woman for about a year.

The man allegedly threatened the victims with a revolver, then fired a round that struck the wall above the headboard of the bed. The victims told investigators that Eggers then turned the gun on himself.

The Benton County Coroner’s Office ruled that Eggers died from a single gunshot wound to his head.
