RICHLAND, Wash.-A man was taken to the hospital after he was shot by Richland police Monday night near Hwy-240 and Duportail.

Officers were called to the Wellsian Way exit off the highway for a vehicle rollover crash, but when they arrived at the scene, nobody was inside.

"Our officers began checking the area, trying to locate any persons who may be in the area and while doing so, they came in contact with an individual", Richland Police Captain Drew Florence says. "Not long after that initial contact, shots were fire a Richland officer."

Florence adds the man was hit and injured, while the officer did not sustain any injuries.

As customary, a Special Investigation Unit has been activated and will continue the probe into what happened, moving forward.
