HERMISTON, Ore.-- A man was arrested in Hermiston Saturday after police say he tried to flee from a traffic stop.

Hermiston Police Cpl. Leonard Stokoe tried to pull over a red 1995 Nissan pickup truck at about 10:50 p.m., but the driver fled on W. Linda Ave.

The vehicle drove down a dead end road, and the driver, identified as Jose Diaz, 63, Irrigon, ran away on foot.

Corporal Stokoe started chasing after the man, but the chase ended when Diaz tripped after about 150 yards.

Diaz was taken into custody and his vehicle was impounded.

The man was was found to be in possession of suspected methamphetamine, and had two outstanding warrants. Diaz also received traffic citations for driving while suspended and driving uninsured.

Diaz was booked into the Umatilla County Jail for eluding police in a vehicle, eluding police on foot, possession of methamphetamine, probation violation warrant, failure to appear warrant.
