This is What Most Likely Snapped 9 Richland Power Poles Last Night
According to emergency scanner traffic, last night power crews found nine to ten power poles snapped in half, causing the closure of Dallas Road in Richland between Goose Ridge Winery and Ava Way, while crews cleared the area.
But what caused it?
When multiple utility poles fail in the same location, it is usually not because the wind simply knocked each one over individually. Instead, experts say these types of events are usually the result of a cascading structural failure.
How One Pole Can Bring Down Ten
Utility poles are designed to withstand impressive wind loads, with many engineered to handle winds exceeding 100 mph. However, the poles themselves aren't usually the weak point.
The real force comes from the power lines stretched between them. During strong wind events, those lines behave like giant sails, placing enormous sideways pressure on the tops of the poles. If one pole is weakened by age, decay, previous damage, or an exceptionally strong gust, it can snap first.
Once that happens, the tension in the power lines changes instantly. The falling pole yanks on neighboring poles with tremendous force, creating a domino effect that can snap several more within seconds.
Could Wednesday's Weather Have Been Enough?
In real-world conditions, experts say widespread pole failures can occur with wind gusts between 50 and 75 mph when combined with factors like saturated ground, falling trees, or aging infrastructure.
Winds approaching 90 mph or higher can even snap healthy poles outright.
The exact cause of last night's incident hasn't been confirmed, and only 40-mph wind gusts were recorded at the airport. The pattern of damage suggests a cascading failure rather than nine or ten independent pole breaks.
Investigators and utility crews will ultimately determine whether high winds, structural weaknesses, debris impacts, or another factor started the chain reaction.
