Hundreds expected at Walla Walla hearing on homeless housing project
The future of a homeless housing project in Walla Walla could be decided in two weeks following Thursday's public hearing.
Elizabeth Chamberlain with the City of Walla Walla says 200 people are expected to come, following a previous hearing at the City Council chambers, which had to be postponed because of the unexpected hundreds of people that showed up.
“The interest for both, for and against is strong, and I anticipate a hearing tonight hearing both sides of the issue,” says Chamberlain.
Chamberlain says the development is ultimately decided by the hearing examiner who will take the public comments into consideration, as well as, if the proposal meets the city municipal code for private property.
City staff did give the proposal approval with an additional nine recommendations.
Madison Park is proposed as a “Tiny House” Village, which would also provide a community center with showers, recreation room and kitchen.
Those in support say it will be safe and secure; only allowing in qualified people for a short time until they can get back on their feet.
But those opposed are not so sure, concerned about the safety of those living in nearby neighborhoods.
The public hearing is set for Thursday, July 7th at 7:00 p.m. at the Marriott in Walla Walla.
