GRANGER, Wash.-- An early morning fire destroyed an abandoned school building in Granger Thursday.

Crews with Yakima County Fire District 5 reported to the 1000 block of Liberty Road at 3:20 a.m. for a report of a structure fire.

The building, which was built in the 1940s as the Liberty School, was about 50% involved in fire when firefighters got to the scene. Not long after crews got to the scene, the building's roof caved in.

Due to the age and disrepair of the building, fire officials made the call to let it burn while crews prevented the flames from spreading to nearby trees and brush.

The building had been abandoned years ago, and there was no power going to the structure.

The Yakima County Fire Marshal's Office is investigating.
