The cost of a Washington State standard enhanced driver's license has tripled from $18 to $54, with the generated revenue slated to help fund transportation projects.

Renewing a license with an enhanced ID upgrade now runs $108 and last for six-years, double what a standard license costs.

According to the Washington Department of Transportation website, the cost for a first-time licensee to get an enhanced ID has spiked from $107 to $143. A first-time passport costs about $135.

The enhanced ID is in some cases an alternate to a passport, and confirms your identity and citizenship. But it is only an acceptable alternative to a passport for re-entry into the U.S. crossing borders by land or sea, not air.
