Buena man killed in head-on crash near Wapato

WAPATO, Wash.-- The Yakima County Sheriff's Office is investigating the death of a Buena man after a two-vehicle crash Thursday evening.

Deputies and the Yakima County District 5 Fire Department responded to the Yakima Valley Highway at Donald-Wapato Road in the town of Donald at about 5:15 p.m. Thursday, where they found two females trapped in a 2014 Chevrolet Cruz, and an unresponsive male driver in a 1999 Chrysler.

Investigators say the Chrysler was headed east on Yakima Valley Highway when it crossed the center line, colliding head-on with the Cruze in the westbound lanes.

Medics at the scene were not able to revive the 25-year old driver of the Chrysler, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

A 19-year old female driver and 25-year old passenger in the Cruz were taken to Memorial Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Deputies say they suspected that the driver of the Chrysler may have been under the influence of intoxicants, but the Coroner's Office will conduct tests to determine for certain.

The Yakima County Sheriff's Office is investigating, and withheld the name of those involved pending the notification of family members.
