For the first time this year in Washington, Yakima County detected the West Nile virus in mosquitoes.

The state health department says last year 24 people reported to have West Nile disease and one person died as a result of their infection. Last season reported the most cases since 2009.

A majority of people infected with West Nile do not get sick. About 1 in 5 people will develop a fever or other symptoms that go away without getting medical treatment.

The health department advises people to protect themselves from the disease, especially those at greater risk. Use EPA-registered insect repellent, Cover up and reduce mosquitoes by removing standing water near your home.

Health officials say while West Nile virus occurs across the U.S., other mosquito-borne diseases, such as chikungunya, dengue, and Zika are spread by mosquitoes not found in Washington.
