In an effort to prepare students if the worse should happen, WSU Tri-Cities held an active shooter training Wednesday, bringing university and Richland police on campus to talk about their tactics.

Jeffrey Dennison with the university says they typically hold at least one training a year, near the start of the semester and this was not in reaction to the shooting which occurred in Spokane.

"It is very important, and it is only underscored by the events that happened in Spokane that we are properly prepared and we are preparing our students to help them save lives in the eventuality that something could happen," says Dennison.

Rod Matheny with Richland Police says every shooter situation is different depending on the environment and the shooter, but the best advice is to try to run away from the area. If you are stuck in the building where the shooting may have occurred, the best advice is to lock the door and hide where you can.

Dennison says the training is all in an effort to keep the students and staff safe while on campus.  He says they also have a website that is updated constantly with safety information and all students are encouraged to sign up for emergency notifications.
