Fish tags allow researches to track the migratory patters of fish and sturgeon, but only as long as the battery lasts, that's generally around 100 days.

Now a new recharging battery allows researchers to track fish for their full lifecycle, giving scientists a better understand of the long-term impact of dams.

Frances White, from the Pacific Northwest National Lab says the fish's movement is what recharges these new batteries.

"Having a tag like this can help us better understand how they behave in water period, and also around different water structures like dams or marine energy devices," says White.

White says the tag comes in small and large sizes to accommodate different sized fish.
