It was 22 years ago, Tuesday, that U.S. Lawmakers signed the bipartisan Violence Against Women Act. Washington Senator Patty Murray says she is proud of the work she has done to make sure the legislation was reauthorized in 2013.

"Women and families across the country have had an extra layer of protection and safety tools they need to get themselves out of dangerous domestic violence situations," says Murray.

Murray says the Department of Urban Housing and Development is getting ready to hand down additional guidance to cities to help them draft ordinances that comply with the act.

In 2013, Senator Murray helped lead efforts in Congress to reauthorize VAWA and expand protections to cover more women in at-risk communities, including tribal women, the LGBT community, immigrants, and women on college campuses.
