RICHLAND, Wash.-- Richland City Councilman Michael Alvarez announced Thursday that he plans to run for Benton County Commissioner for District 1.

The long time Richland resident and business owner said in a press release that he wants to improve transparency in the Commissioners' office, making sure the Public Safety Sales Tax is being allocated appropriately, and hopes to bring a mental health and drug treatment center to the Tri-Cities.

Alvarez was first elected to the Richland City Council in November 2017.

Jerome Delvin currently holds the District 1 seat, and will now face two challengers in the August primary election. Jeff Smart announced earlier in the week that he plans to run for the position.

Candidate filing week in Washington begins on Monday, May 11, 2020, and closes on Friday, May 15, 2020.
