LAKEWOOD, Wash. (AP) - A new report says Washington's beleaguered mental hospital hasn't been accredited for more than three months, but that it failed to mention that fact to staff or prospective employees.

KOMO-TV says Western State Hospital in Lakewood has continued to claim on web postings, fact sheets and job listings that it was fully accredited by The Joint Commission, an Illinois-based organization.

In reality, Western State voluntarily gave up its accreditation in May, just before it entered a reform agreement with federal regulators to fix safety problems that threatened millions of dollars in federal funding.

The Department of Social and Health Services, which runs the hospital, told The Associated Press in an email Monday that after discussions with the governor's office, the attorney general's office and the federal regulators, it decided not to worry about maintaining accreditation until after it implements the reform agreement.
