A 31-year-old Pasco man remains in the hospital in stable condition after a shoot-out with police Saturday.

Officers held a press conference Tuesday releasing a few details and identified those who were part of the incident at a home on the 900 block of S. 9th Ave. Captain Ken Roske says three officers have been put on administrative leave after each fired their weapon when officers say Edwin Espejo fired his hand-gun at them several times.

Roske identified those men as Pasco Officer Matt Griffin, who has been an officer for 5 years, Officer John D'Aquila, who has been an officer for 2 1/2 years and Officer David Dillsworth, who has been an officer for 2 years.

Captain Roske could not give any specific information on how many shots were fired but said Espejo was hit multiple times. Officers say they immediately started "life-saving" efforts and Roske says their actions very well could have saved the 31-year-old's life.

“The officers applied tourniquets to at least three wounds, and the suspect was taken to hospital where he has undergone surgery,” SGT David Allen with Pasco Police said at the scene on Saturday. “He was originally listed as critical, but at last report he is expected to survive.”

Roske added Espejo is a convicted felon and had prior arrests for domestic violence. The Captain did not know if any similar calls had been made in the past to the home, where the shooting occurred. He also could not go into details about the reason they were called to the house beyond saying it was a violent domestic call.

On Saturday, officers told us when they arrived, some family members were gathered outside of the home, saying that a man was beating a woman in the home’s basement. Three officers went into the basement, where they found a 31-year old man and several family members, including children. The man allowed the two kids to leave, and officers expected the man to surrender, but he continued to resist efforts to take him into custody. Roske said Tuesday officers attempted to tase the suspect but it did not work. Officers say Espejo reached for a handgun and shot multiple rounds at police and they fired back.

Roske says body cameras were not in use, due to the program still in the beta stages and only two officers using the devices.

The investigation is being handled by the Special Investigation Unit and the Franklin County Prosecutor will determine the charges.
