PASCO, Wash.-- Two children were home alone when a fire broke out at their home Thursday morning.

According to Chief Deputy Ed Dunbar with the Pasco Fire Department, they were called out the home in the 2700 block of Blaine Court just off of A St. at 10:43 a.m. where they found smoke coming from the house.

The two children who were in the home when the fire started were able to escape safely and were outside when firefighters arrived. Their father had left the home briefly to run an errand.

Crews managed to keep the fire from spreading beyond the kitchen and dining room, though there is extensive smoke damage throughout the house, and firefighters had to cut into the roof to make sure fire hadn't spread to the attic.

"The homeowner did ask me because he left the back sliding glass door open when he came out of the building and asked if was okay that he had left the door open," Dunbar said. "In this case the front door and the garage door were closed, but the back slider was open. Anytime you have the opportunity to close a door on a fire, always close the door. It'll actually limit the fire's spread."

Four people are displaced by the blaze, but they have family nearby that they can stay with.

The cause is under investigation.
