The US Department of the Interior and Agriculture announced Friday that it has awarded $1 million to the Kennewick Irrigation District to allow the agency to line more than 7 miles of canal with a high-density polyethylene geomembrane. The liners will be used in canals that are formed from dirt, and is expected to prevent about 1,067 acre-feet per year from seeping into the ground. The money will pay for about a quarter of the total project cost, which is estimated at $3,880,579.
