The organization representing Washington’s volunteer firefighters is conducting classes in Wenatchee this weekend.

225 volunteer and career personnel either paid for the training or were subsidized by their departments.

John Ostergard with the Washington State Firefighters Association (WSFFA) notes instruction’s being offered in a number of skill-sets.

“There’s a ropes class” said Ostergard.  “There’s a hands on life-fire burn [class], officer development classes, the certification for incident safety officer.  These are things that they can take back to their departments and use.”

Ostergard, who’s a volunteer from Olympia, says the instruction’s been organized to cover different topics over the weekend.  “We’ll be putting on seven different tracks of classes for training that they’ll come in and spend over the three days doing.”

WSFFA primarily works with lawmakers to secure benefits for its 14,000 volunteers.  It’s it’s training classes meet the same standards required for career firefighters.

The volunteer and career personnel who are gathering in Wenatchee are attending classes Friday through Sunday.
