An animal rescue says a dog is fighting to stay alive after he was shot in the chest.

Mikey’s Chance Canine Rescue says the German Shepard’s foster family came home to find him bleeding and later found out he had been hit at close range.

The shelter says he was first taken to Vista Vet for preliminary x-rays and later moved to Mid-Columbia Pet Emergency Services. They say the bullet narrowly missed his chest.

The rescue center says the dog was sent to the WSU Veterinary Center to do a blood transfusion and do further tests to see what damage was caused.

The shelter is asking for donations which you can mail (PO Box 4535, West Richland, WA 99353) or Paypal (simply log into your account, enter in mikeyschance@gmail.com and the amount).

The Benton County sheriff’s office is investigating.
