A man is behind bars after police say he hit a fire hydrant and took off, only to return to his car for a bag of meth.

Kennewick officers say witnesses saw the 28-year-old run from the car after a crash near Hood Ave. and Neel St. early Thursday morning.

A short time later, officers say the man returned to the car a second time to retrieve a small item. Officers were able to catch him near 3000 block of W. Canal Dr. when he fell down an embankment into an open field off Canal Drive.

Officers say a K-9 sniffed out the bag of meth the man had tried to ditch, before he fell.

He is being booked in jail for possession of meth and related driving charges.
